CDC Report Links Family Structure and Child Health As divorce rates remain high and cohabitation becomes more commonplace, an increasing number of U.S. children will spend a larger proportion of their lives in a nontraditional family. A recent CDC study links family structure to child well-being and overall health, both physical and mental. Click here for a copy.
The findings presented in the report indicate that children living in nuclear families - that is, in families consisting of two married adults who are the biological or adoptive parents of all children in the family - were generally healthier, more likely to have access to healthcare, and less likely to have definite or severe emotional or behavioral difficulties than children living in nonnuclear families. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Funding Streams for Relationship Education Anti-Violence Programs for Youth Funded
United Methodist Church: A Brighter Future for Children and Youth A Brighter Future for Children and Youth, an initiative of the United Methodist Church, supports nonprofit organizations nationwide that address the needs of children and young people age 5 to 18 in the areas of violence prevention, anti-abuse, and relationship abuse. Grants of up to $4,000 are provided to small-scale, community, and church-based programs. Priority is given to programs that have significant involvement of women and youth at the grassroots level. Funded programs should demonstrate the ability to raise additional funds from other sources. Grant requests must be submitted by July 1, 2011. Application guidelines and forms may be downloaded from the United Methodist Church website.
(Editor's Note: One way to a brighter, non-abusive future is by learning healthy relationship skills!)
Marriage/Relationship and Fatherhood Funding Announced The Department of Health and Human Services has announced their plan to competitively award cooperative agreements with organizations for demonstration projects that support healthy relationships and marriage as well as responsible fatherhood. Requests for proposals will be available in mid-June. Completed proposals are due mid-August. Decisions will be made by end of September.
Below are four of the seven grants most relevant to youth relationship education (the fatherhood grants will most likely allow relationship skill building with teen fathers). Sign up on each web page to receive updates as they are announced.

Donors Choose DonorsChoose.org, an online charity, connects donors to classrooms in need. They are inviting "front-line educators" in public schools to identify the needs of the students they serve. Front-line educators are teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, and school nurses who work full time and deal directly with students. If you are a front-line educator, you can submit the project you would like funded on their website and have donors from around the country help your classroom out. Great resource!
